Laser dentistry is one of dentistry's latest advances. The Laser delivers energy in the form of light. Depending on the intended result, this energy travels at different wavelengths and is absorbed by a "target" tissue. In dentistry, these targets can be enamel, decay, gum tissue, or whitening enhancers. Each one absorbs a different wavelength of light while reflecting others.
At Westwood Dental Center, we use a diode laser for many soft tissue related procedures. In fact, Dr. Shah is a trainer for the Odyssey diode laser by Ivoclar-Vivadent. In some instances, minimal or no local anesthesia is required. For soft tissue (surgical) procedures it eliminates the need for suturing and healing is much faster.
Procedures that Dr. Shah and Dr. Johal perform using the Odyssey diode laser include:
- Stop bleeding gums when placing fillings/crowns.
- Removal of inflamed or diseased tissues
- Uncovering implants without a scalpel
- Periodontal, or gum related care
- Treating herpes lesions
- Aphthous Ulcer treatment (canker sores)
- Frenectomy (tongue-tie release) without anesthesia or sutures
- Reducing tooth sensitivity
- Crown lengthening (gingivectomy) and other gum corrections
